Milne's High School - whole school event

For EDL 2019, teachers and S6 pupils at Milne’s High School worked together to organise a vibrant, whole school event in celebration of EDL, and created a challenge that proved informative, fun and engaging for all pupils from S1-S6.

The school kindly shared their resources. If you are looking for something different to do in your school this year, why not read through the description and access the resources below.

Mr Croissant

Croissant fever hit the school the week before EDL when pictures of an intrepid travelling croissant and croissant jokes began appearing on all the walls and doors. The following week, all classes from S1-S5 kicked off Period 1 with a slideshow introducing them to the European Day of Languages and our EDL character, Hugo Croissant. Hugo explained he was on a gap year and needed the pupils’ help to travel further around Europe.

Firstly, each class had to cut out Hugo’s picture and give him a personal touch such as a beard or a beret. His first destination was Germany and each class had to correctly complete Round 1 of Hugo’s quiz on Germany. Before they could move on to Round 2, two pupils from each class had to bring their own Hugo pic and his passport to the Modern Languages Department where they had to correctly pronounce a phrase in German in order to get past the S6 border police and enter Germany where Hugo’s passport was stamped and their photo taken against a German background. Pupils repeated these steps to help Hugo travel to Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Greece. While the pupils were out, the classes watched a short clip about EDL or the country that Hugo was visiting.

The event was a huge success with pupils and staff alike. The pupils said they learned a lot about different countries and cultures and many said they felt more positively about learning a language as a result. Our S6 prefects showed fantastic leadership skills running the challenge.
