At Comely Park Primary School in Falkirk we celebrated European Day of Languages in a variety of creative ways. From Nursery through to Primary 7 the children explored different aspects of their selected country and investigated the culture, the history and the spoken language.
Due to some of the children having Turkish as their first language the Nursery focused on Turkey. They made replicas of the flag and learned some Turkish words.
The Primary 1 pupils focused on Spain and found out information on Pablo Picasso. They practised some flamenco dancing and created their own Picasso themed artwork.
Primary 2’s countries of choice were France and the Netherlands. They have been busy all week building Eiffel Tower structures during STEM activities as well as creating French menus and learning French songs.
Primary 3 really enjoyed learning about Sweden. They learned lots of new words and practised conversing with one another. During STEM they built the Oresund bridge.
Primary 4 focused on the countries France and Italy. They researched facts about the countries as well as researching the famous Venetian rowing boat, gondolas. They created their own gondolas using paper. Mrs Kennedy made the traditional Italian food pizza on the pizza oven. They also created Eiffel tower artwork as well as replicated the Mona Lisa.
Primary 5 focused on Spain. They investigated the traditional Spanish food tapas and create their own tapas foods using paper plates. They also researched the history of the flag. They learned about Spanish classroom instructions then designed a comic strip to help them remember them.
Primary 6 learned about the country Germany. We were using atlases today in order to identify major German cities and rivers. P6 were creating fortune tellers which focused on German colours, it was a bit fiddly but everyone managed to achieve their goal!!
Primary 7 looked at the country Iceland. They worked in groups to create fact file posters on Iceland. They learned Icelandic words practised these with each other.
